I Am

I Am

I am Caring and Independent

I wonder why people think there is a secret to happiness

I hear that time will always move forward

I am on a journey towards traveling the world

I want to impact others

I am Caring and Independent

I pretend to be a famous Actress and Singer

I feel scared of disappointing everyone

I touch the clouds and stars to feel peace

I worry that true love might be gone

I cry when I see people struggle

I am Caring and Independent

I understand that I don’t let people close

I say that the world needs more kindness

I dream about freedom, adventuring with no limit

I try to understand why skin color matters

I hope I grow to be someone my family can be proud of

I am Caring and Independent

I am Poem

I am caring and forgiving

I wonder what my future has in store

I hear “one smile can make a difference”

I am on a journey towards self-love

I want to make one person happy each day

I am caring and forgiving

I pretend everything is alright

I feel lonely sometimes

I worry others might see my pain

I cry when reality catches up to me

I am caring and forgiving

I understand how to look on the positive side of things

I say “ stay positive, take risks, have courage, be patient, don’t let fear stop you, and finally just have fun”

I dream that I will dance forever

I try to make sure my friends know how important they are to me

I hope one day to finally see all the bad things go away

I am caring and forgiving

I am enough

 I am shy, yet caring

I wonder why I’m not enough

I hear it gets better

I am on a journey towards happiness

I want to live a long, happy life

I am shy, yet caring

I pretend I’m happy all the time

I feel as my mind is holding me back

I touch the sky for strength

I worry about my happiness

I cry when we fight

I am happy all the time

I understand I’m not enough

I say I’m okay when I’m really not

I dream to be happy

I try to fake a smile every day

I hope I find my happiness soon

I am enough.

All That Glitters

A pair of young blue eyes stared anxiously at the cracked metal floor, watching as oversized bugs and rats crawled around without a care in the world. She noticed people conversing in front of her but it was impossible to make out what they were saying. Charlie felt as if she couldn’t even hear her own thoughts as more and more people were shoved into the overcrowded elevator. Angels weren’t supposed to be here. She felt her hands begin to shake as her wings clasped tightly to her body. If it wasn’t for her stupid handicap she would have passed the exam and be far away from here. Her legs felt weak. What kind of angel can’t fly?

A green haired boy with pointed ears pushed his way through the crowd. Behind him was a taller girl who had long silver blonde hair that was slightly translucent at the ends. It seemed to always be blowing in a nonexistent wind. Charlie looked at them. “You guys failed too?” They both showed sad smiles. “I mean I expected Axel to fail, but you Willow? How?” Axel gasped dramatically, clutching his chest. “Charlotte Athena Mcdola! After 11 years of friendship this is what you think of me?” He wiped a fake tear, falling to his knees. “For shame.” Willow rolled her eyes as Axel, who was now clinging to Charlie’s leg while ugly sobbing, continued the charade. The nymph returned her gaze to Charlie and spoke. “I tried my best,’ she shrugged. “But I guess I needed to practice my magic more. I was way out of the other’s league.” Axel stood up, and wiped his face, grinning. “And I almost killed one of my partners in the last round!” He added. Willow glared at him. “You act like you’re proud of that.” He stuck his tongue out in response and then looked down. “I also couldn’t do most of the spells.” he mumbled. Charlie opened her mouth to speak, but was interrupted by an intercom.

“Greetings young enchanters,” The voice was monotone, almost robotic. “Because you have all disappointed you will be sent to Apotychía Island, where you will be given the chance to redeem yourselves.” The whole elevator went silent. Willow’s eyes glowed faintly and she paused before turning to her two friends with a fearful expression. “There will be three moonstones hidden throughout the island. Your goal is to retrieve one of them, meaning that only three of you will be able to pass. Everyone else who fails to locate a stone will be disposed of.” A timer appeared above the elevator doors. “The doors will open once the time runs out. Best of luck to the three who manage to survive.” Panic filled the room. Charlie felt as if she was going to vomit. There was no way she was going to survive. Axel held out his arm and she clinged to it. Willow frowned as she watched the bright red numbers slowly begin counting down.

The rusted metal doors shuffled open and the group stepped out feeling a gust of frigid wind. It was night outside causing there to be barely any light. The two girls stayed close to each other as they watched Axel disappear into the darkness. As their eyes adjusted they noticed a shadowy figure standing just inches from them. The creature was obscured by a mask and cloak. “It’s a gatherer,” Willow whispered. “Keep quiet.” A second passed. The gatherer took one last look at them and then took off, but as it did another figure appeared in its place. It seemed to be limping. Charlie stared at it. “Is that.. Axel..?” the two said in unison, running up to him. Axel winced as Willow grabbed his face, inspecting the bruise that covered it. “What did you do?!” she demanded. He let out a small laugh. “I’m fine! There was a pile of supplies up the hill and I kinda got trampled,” He set down a handful of miscellaneous objects onto the ground. “But I managed to get some things.” Charlie sat down, checking the items. Willow sighed, gently placing her hand on the mark. “We could have gone with you.” She began to hum, watching as the injury started to glow. “We wouldn’t have made it in time.” The pixie repiled, watching as Willow slowly removed her hand from his face. The lesion was gone. “Thanks.” Axel smiled and then the two of them looked down at Charlie, who had organized the pile of supplies. “We have rope, two bottles of water a few batteries and a spoon.” Willow crouched down. “I’ll take the rope, Charlie can take the water and-” “I call ze spoon!” Axel interrupted, grabbing the cutlery. “And Axel can take the spoon. So that leaves us with batteries. Willow picked up the batteries. “These are useless. They only work in the human world.” She handed them to Axel.

The trio stood up, looking around for any spots the moonstones would be located. “There’s some cliffs that aren’t that far from here,” Axel said, pointing up another hill. “We might have some luck there.” The three of them began walking towards the rocky cliff. There were countless rocks and decaying trees scattered below them, if anyone slipped it would be very unlikely that they’d survive the fall. Willow carefully approached the edge, looking down, Charlie and Axel doing the same. Charlie squinted through the darkness and blinked when something shiny caught her eye. There was a small hole in the cliff directly below them. “I think there’s one in the hole over there!” They stared at it for a second before Willow spoke. “How are we supposed to get to it?” Axel lifted the rope from Willow’s neck. “We could tie this to someone and then lower them down,” He looked at the two girls’ expressions and sighed. “I know it’s dangerous, but it’s the only option we have!”

Willow exhaled. “He’s right,” she turned her attention to Charlie. “Charlie you’re gonna have to be the one we lower down.” Charlie froze. “W-what? Why me? I can’t-” Axel placed a hand on her shoulder. “Charlie, you can do this. We need you to do this. You’re the lightest one out of us and you have wings.” Charlie opened her mouth to protest but Axel continued speaking. “Yes, I know you can’t fly, but you’re going to be able to someday, I promise. But you’re going to have to be alive in order to do that,” He pointed to the hole in the cliff. “And that stone is the one thing that is going to keep you alive. Your future depends on this, Charlotte.” Charlie stayed quiet for a moment, then slowly nodded. “I’ll do it.”

Axel gave her a small smile as Willow tied the rope around her waist. Axel then tied the other end securely around an old tree stump. They each grabbed a segment of rope tightly, and slowly began to lower the angel down. Axel watched as Charlie let go of the edge. “Be careful,” The rope became taut as Charlie dropped about a foot. The nymph and pixie struggled, trying to keep the rope from slipping through their grasps. Charlie let out a small squeak as she dangled above the deadly rocks and trees below her. Willow and Axel began gradually feeding the rope to the cliff’s edge. Charlie felt her nerves rise as the hole she had spotted got closer. No one noticed the rope rubbing against a pointed rock.

“You doing ok?” Axel called, his voice strained. Charlie was about to reply but there was a sudden snapping sound. Everyone froze. Charlie turned her gaze to the rope, her stomach dropped. One of the sections had broken. “What was that?’ Willow asked, her voice filled with panic. Neither of them dared to lower their friend any further. Charlie was parazlied with fear. She couldn’t speak. She watched as more fibers began to break under the stress of her weight. “The rope is breaking! Pull her up! Pull her up!” She heard Axel shout from above. Both of them tugged on the rope as quickly as they could. The rope was now down to its last few fibers. Charlie grabbed onto the cliff wall, trying to climb up but it was no use, there was nothing to get a grip on. There was another cracking sound. Charlie flapped her wings violently as a scared bird would when captured, praying that this time she’d finally be able to take flight. Axel cursed, pulling on the rope desperately.

A high pitched scream filled the air as the rope shot back towards Axel and Willow. It was now shortened at the end. They both hurried to the edge just in time to see their best friend plummet to rocks below, completely disappearing from sight. “CHARLOTTE!” Both of them yelled, tears filling Willow’s eyes. For a split second, Axel contemplated jumping from the cliff to go after Charlie, but was held back by Willow. “We need to go,” she choked quickly, dragging Axel away from the cliff. “We need to tell someone..” He wanted to protest but decided it was best to stay quiet. Both of them were trembling from head to toe.

Charlie groaned, not wanting to open her eyes. Her whole body ached and stung. She took a deep breath, but immediately went into a fit of coughs. She had inhaled.. water? Charlie’s eyes flickered open as she tried to make out her surroundings. She definitely wasn’t on the rocky earth, but in a shallow pond. The pool had definitely softened the fall. She looked up and noticed a fissure in the stone ceiling. She guessed it was where she had fallen from. Charlie weakly sat up, wincing as multiple parts of her body stung because of the movement. Her feathered wings were soaking wet, but fortunately not damaged. Eventually, she got to her feet, trembling with the effort of standing. Her arms, legs, face and torso were completely covered with cuts, scrapes and bruises she’d acquired from the fall. She stumbled as she walked, and concluded that nothing was broken, even though the pain felt as if every bone in her body had shattered. She shivered, but could still feel the warmth of fresh blood spreading throughout her body. Charlie started to limp around the cave, remembering the moonstone. If she could just retrieve it, this would all be over. She looked around, seeing the same glimmer that she saw before the fall. She frowned, noticing that it was a lot farther away than she thought. As she walked, she admired the massive stalactites and stalagmites that protruded from the ceiling and floor. She then jumped, hearing a small whining noise. She looked behind her, the sound got louder and almost sounded as if someone was crying. Charlie turned back around, but froze, as she was face to face with the sobbing creature.

Willow ran, looking around frantically. “Willow.. There’s no one here..” Axel said softly. “There has to be someone!!” she shouted, making Axel flinch. “We can’t just leave her there! We need to find help!” She tugged at her hair. Axel grabbed her arm, stopping her from running again. “This place is meant to kill failures like us!” Axel responded. “Do you really think they have someone to help?” Willow’s left eye twitched, and her fist made contact with Axel’s nose. “Shut up! Just shut up!” she screamed. There was a crunching noise, the force of the punch almost caused the boy to fall onto his back. A painful burning sensation flooded Axel’s body. He sniffled, but could only feel the hot liquid clog up his broken nose. It was all done in one punch. Willow gasped, looking at him with a horrified expression. “I’m sorry- I’m-” Her eyes shined again. She slowly backed away. “I need to g-go..” She ran, leaving the injured pixie alone in the darkness.

Axel simply watched as Willow ran, not bothering to go after her. Usually in this situation he would run after her, but the combined pain of his nose and heart were unable to give him a reason to follow. He wiped his nose, smearing the blood onto his shirt. He slowly turned around and looked at the elevator, the machine that caused all of this. The rusted blood stained elevator stared back, but there was a faint glow appearing from the back of it. He followed it, noticing a small door. It brightened as he reached for the handle, hesitantly opening it. He stepped inside and immediately the door slammed shut and the bright light faded. Axel shivered, the room was cold, dark and damp and seemed to be covered entirely in rust. He tried to calm himself down as he walked back to the metal door. He reached for the doorknob to open it again, but froze when he saw that there was no handle.

Axel inhaled sharply, trying not to allow himself to freak out. As his eyes adapted to the blackness he realized that this wasn’t a room he was in. It was a stairwell. He looked down, not being able to see the bottom. Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out one of the batteries and dropped it. He waited, but there was no indication that it had hit the bottom of the well. A sharp laughter filled the stairwell, causing Axel to crouch down, covering his ears. The sound was unbearable and Axel’s head felt as if it was going to explode. Axel started to hyperventilate as the horrifying laughter grew closer and closer. He froze, hearing faint footsteps from behind him. He wasn’t alone.

Willow panted, trying to catch her breath as she leaned against a rotted dead tree. Her whole body was twitching and shaking. She let out a shaky breath, feeling hot tears flood down her face. The back of her head slammed against the lifeless bark, as she silently cursed at herself. She wanted all of this to be over. A high pitched ringing lingered in Willow’s ears, breaking the silence. Multiple faces appeared a few feet ahead of her but they immediately disappeared as Willow made eye contact. The faces looked like they had belonged to children. As Willow tried to figure out what had happened, she was broken out of her thoughts by another frightening sound that broke the quiet.

There was an ear piercing scream that seemed to echo all around her. Blurry white figures spun around her in slow motion, taking the shape of children playing. They seemed to be playing a game but their voices continued to scream and plead to some unknown force. Willow covered her face with her hands and cried, she didn’t know what to do. The figures screamed certain phrases that triggered flashbacks in Willow’s head that she tried so hard to hide away. They mimicked the voices of her parents who had treated her terribly for so many years. The figures continued to dance around her saying phrases such as “Evil child! You need to be kept away from everyone. We don’t know what went wrong!” Willow fell to her knees, shaking uncontrollably. “S-stop it!” She begged, but the figures ignored her. “You’re a parasite! No one is like you, no one acts like you, no one speaks like you. We want you to die! We wanted to dispose of you. Mistake. Abomination. Failure.” Suddenly, the voices stopped, causing Willow to look up. Her tear filled eyes made it almost impossible to see, but she continued to stare at the amorphous mass that lingered above her. She recognized the voice.

Charlie stared at the figure in front of her listening to the soft whimpers it made. She slowly took a step back but as she did the creature shrieked and grabbed her arm pulling her back. “Please don’t leave..” it whined, sadly, lifting it’s face up. Charlie let out a horrified gasp as she looked at its face. “W-willow..?” She asked, but coughed, as it had come out as a croak. The figure did in fact resemble the familiar nymph, but there were vast differences. This Willow had greasy, messy, and dirt filled hair that had chunks ripped out everywhere. Scratches covered it’s face and there seemed to be a medium sized hole in the stomach that was leaking a dark liquid. It made eye contact with Charlie. “You’re so pretty,” it cooed. “I wish I was pretty.” It started to sob again. Charlie stared once more, feeling awkward pity. “Hey,” She said softly, her hands shaking. “Your eyes a-are really pretty!” It was true, the creature did have very pretty bright blue eyes. “Your hair is pretty.” It replied, it's voice going quiet. “Thank you..?” Charlie replied but cringed as it came out as a question. The creature stared at her. “I want it.” Within a second the creature forcefully grabbed Charlie’s hair, pulling roughly at the scalp. Charlie winced, trying to pry the thing’s hands out of her hair. She flapped her wings, causing a small gust of wind to come up. This caused the creature to let go, even though it had successfully ripped out a handful of Charlie’s hair. Charlie ran, trying to ignore the unbearable pain in her bruised legs. She could hear the creature following, seeming not that far behind.

“Hiya!” echoed a soft familiar voice. Axel uncovered his ears, staring in disbelief. “Charlie?!” He exclaimed, running up and wrapping his arms around “her.” It hugged back, giggling, wrapping it’s arms around Axel tightly. In fact, it was almost too tight, with any more pressure he felt as if his ribs were going to break. He gasped for air, and as he did he noticed that the creature’s arms were literally wrapped around him, it’s wrists were tied together as if it’s arms and hands were made out of rope. Axel pushed the creature away from him. “WEEEE!!” it laughed, it’s arms extending more, giving the pixie an opportunity to escape. Axel took in a breath through his nose, wincing as he remembered the pain that came with it. He looked at the creature again. “Who are you??” He asked, voice shaking slightly. “Where am I? Where’s Charlie?” The creature shrugged, swaying back and forth innocently. Axel sighed and started to walk down a set of stairs, knowing he was not going to get any answers from this thing that pretended to be Charlie. The creature strolled behind him dancing as an 80’s cartoon character would. A few hours passed and Axel had walked down forty-three flights of stairs, still being followed by the cheerful creature. “You should kill Willow.” The creature said, completely out of the blue. Axel stopped dead in his tracks and turned, facing the mimic of his best friend. “What did you say..?” He asked, and the creature smiled. “I said you should kill Willow,” She repeated, her smile not fading. The blood curdling laughter started once more.

“Axel..?” Willow asked tentatively, wiping the tears from her eyes. The creature didn’t respond as it stepped closer, its face becoming visible from the moonlight. It’s face looked exactly like Axel’s, it’s nose leaked a waterfall of blood, causing it’s shirt and pants to be covered with the red liquid. Willow could feel the guilt eat at her as she looked at it. “I’m sorry for punching you, Axel,” she said softly, looking down. “I can heal y-” Her sentence was cut off as Axel’s hand slammed into the side of her face. More tears fell as she felt her face, wincing as it had already begun to bruise. The creature chuckled, sending shivers down Willow’s spine. She was too afraid to look up. The creature who she had thought was Axel walked up to her, this time it’s foot smashed into her side, causing her to yell. Pain radiated through Willow’s side and face and she looked up at her tormentor. “Axel,” she pleaded, crying slightly. “I’m so-sorry..” This just inradged the creature the more. “SORRY IS A WORD YOU DON’T KNOW THE MEANING OF!” It yelled, the screaming returned, flooding Willow’s ears. “I’m sorry!” She repeated, pulling at her hair. “I can help! I can- I can-” It crouched down, putting its face close to the coiling mass. It spoke, its voice doing a complete one eighty. It was now low and soft. “You can what?” It asked, it’s eyes full of hate. “Kill me just like you killed Charlotte?” Willow pulled out a heap of her hair just as the creature said those words. She rolled up in a ball, her eyes rolling upwards. “I didn’t mean to!” she shrieked. “I didn’t mean to..” she repeated. “I didn’t mean to..”

Charlie looked around desperately for the stone, hearing the footsteps behind her grow closer and closer. She had made it to the end of the cave where she had seen the glowing light, but now it was nowhere to be seen. She then noticed a faint glow from behind a small batch of rocks. The aching in her legs was almost unbearable, but she didn’t let it stop her. She ran closer to the pile of rocks, and prepared to grab the stone. She was finally going to end this nightmare! Once she made it to her destination she was hit hard with a wave of disappointment, rage, and hopelessness. The glowing hadn’t been a moonstone, but instead pieces of gold growing from the cave wall. Charlie felt her whole body go numb, but not a second later she had begun to scream. Her yells of fury echoed around the cave as she picked up a large rock and threw it against the stone wall as hard as she could. She picked up more rocks, watching as they all shattered into fragments. She had started to cry, and she didn’t know if it was out of frustration or fear. She cursed, throwing rocks in every direction, each one breaking into pieces. More tears fell as she could hear the footsteps get louder. Charlie picked up one last rock and through it directly onto the ground, and to her surprise it only cracked in half. She was then temporarily blinded by an intense shimmer that came from the stone. The angel shielded her eyes and carefully backed away. Once her eyes adjusted, she took a step closer to the rock and gasped. Inside the rock was a small round stone that glittered throughout the cave. “No way..” Charlie breathed, picking up the smooth translucent moonstone. Her moment of victory didn’t last long as the creature stood just a mere few feet away. Charlie gripped the stone tightly not daring to let go. The creature ran to her and Charlie began to panic, flapping her wings desperately, gritting her teeth. “COME ON STUPID WINGS!” she shouted at them, flapping fursiouly. “FLY!!” Just as the creature reached for her hair, Charlie was lifted into the air, finally, for the first time in her life, taking flight. She laughed in disbelief, this time crying tears of happiness as she soared around the stalagmites of the cave. Charlie looked down at the creature, but her pupils contracted as the creature morphed into a gatherer. She still attempted her escape, but the gatherer was a much faster flyer. Charlie cried out as something sharp sank into her side. She fell, feeling herself go unconscious. She watched the deadly rocks got closer and hoped that her friends wouldn’t be too disappointed in her. There was a nasty crunch as the angel hit the ground. She had fallen head first.

Axel rocked back and forth, covering his ears as the laughter played over and over. “Aren’t you mad at her?” the creature asked sweetly, flicking Axel’s head with its finger. “She hurt you, don’t you think it’s fair for you to hurt her back?” Axel shook his head frantically, not uncovering his ears. “No! She’s my friend! She didn’t mean to!” The creature frowned. “Just like you didn’t mean to kill me?” Axel stayed quiet, shutting his eyes. “You’re not Charlotte.” He answered, groaning as the high pitched laughter grew worse. The mimic climbed up the railing and stood on it, trying to stay balanced. “Are you going to let me die again?” It asked, pretending to fall. Axel looked up, and spoke. “You’re not Charlotte.” He repeated, slowly getting up. The creature extended it’s arms, pulling Axel closer and making him stand on the railing. Axel looked down, still not being able to see the bottom of the stairwell. The creature stepped closer to him, smiling. “You let your best friend die, Axel.” It said, grinning as Axel’s breath quickened. “Charlie would have saved you.” It leaned closer. “Who’s idea was it to use the rope?” Axel was trembling, tears falling down his face. The creature gripped the pixie’s shoulders. “You’re going to die, Axel.” Axel turned to the creature, who was now wearing a mask and cloak. The fear radiating off Axel filled the gatherer with satisfaction. “In the same way you killed Charlotte.” Axel didn’t even scream as he was pushed off the railing, his body drowning in darkness. “I’m sorry Charlotte..” He thought sadly, watching his tears fly upwards. “I’m sorry Willow.. I’m sorry I failed both of you..”

Willow could see as Axel’s body hit the bottom of the stairwell. His body was crumpled on the ground, his neck and limbs bent at impossible angles and his head cracked cleanly open. He definitely wasn’t breathing. Willow’s eyes stopped glowing as she could now see where she was. She had seen visions of both her friend’s dead bodies right from the start. She had tried to stop it, but everything she did failed. You can’t stop fate. Screams floated around Willow as she laid helplessly on the cold ground. She didn’t move, she had given up. She could feel herself crying, but continued to watch as the gatherer slowly approached her. Willow closed her eyes, knowing that the terrorizing pain in her body would be gone any second now. She smiled, knowing that soon the three of them would finally be together again.

There's Been A Mistake

The clock read 1:48 AM as I heard a storm of people bust through my front door. Not just my sight, but my hearing felt blurry too. Sounds were muffled as my bedroom door slammed open and suddenly my body was being rolled out from under my blankets. As they unglued me from my bed, all I could see were tall, large men dressed in dark colors, but my puffy eyes could not make out any faces. I, a dainty little girl, was being roughly thrown from my house by these unknown people as a click of handcuffs rang out, signaling my restrainment. We exited the front door and all I could see were bright lights shining through my squinted eyes. I heard a car door open when a large hand pushed my arm, directing me to get in. And there I sat on the leather seats of a car owned by someone I did not know with my hands restrained behind my back. The outside air was brisk but the car was warm allowing me to fall back into my sleep though I tried to fight it away.

I felt the car come to a hard stop. My eyes cracked open. Confusion ran through my head as my body started to wake up until I remembered what had happened a few hours earlier. It was still dark, but my eyes were slowly adjusting to the street light. I could hear the sounds of a quiet conversation and waves crashing. Where was I? No one else was in the car with me as I investigated further into my location. As I stared out the window to my left, the door on my right was harshly pulled open. A strong gust of wind flew into my face as a hand grabbed my arm. I heard a deep voice order me to get out of the car and I did as told. When I stepped out, the cold concrete ground forced me to shiver as I realized I hadn’t even had shoes on.

I stood there still not recognizing any voices or faces. But I did hear a voice shyly say “San Fransisco” as I listened to the conversation happening at the front of the car. SAN FRANSISCO?! These mysterious strangers had brought me from my town of Redding over three hours to San Fransisco. But why? When the conversation ended more pushing and shoving came. This time I was being forced onto some sort of large boat. I was placed in a space underneath the top deck. Hollering occurred and I felt the boat take off from the dock. I sat by myself in almost complete darkness; I sat with just me and my thoughts. Where was I going? Who were these people? What did I do? Why me? Theories ran through my head as I questioned my every move.

The boat came to a jarring halt and my body jerked forward a bit before hearing a door creak open. Yet another deep voice commanding me to get up. With the little strength I had, I lifted myself up off the cold floor of that boat and walked towards that man. I had asked these men what was happening several times but I never got a response. This man’s answer was no different from the rest. They led me off the boat before I took a step onto cold concrete yet again. The sky was still dark making things hard to see, but all I could make out was some large, intimidating looking building and water surrounding us completely

I was brought inside, my hands still restricted behind my back with only the clothes on my body. When they had finally undone the cuffs, red marks around both of my wrists had shown how much I really was struggling. Not only with trying to break free, but also trying to make out what the hell was going on. As they shoved me along, finally entering the building, everything started clicking. The sight of steel bars, guards, and many intimidating people unraveled my thoughts finally making me understand that I was in a prison. Not only a prison but the highest security prison in the United States: Alcatraz.

My heart pounded even faster now that I knew where I was. I scrambled through my words and thoughts trying to form some kind of real sentence. Yelling words in an attempt to figure out why I, an unknown girl from a town three hours away, was being put in a high-security prison. They have to have the wrong person, right? Wrong. I found this out when they had checked me in. I was held to the side, being physically restrained by one of the men while another talked to the lady who I assumed was in charge of the process of entering this place. I heard both of them blurt out my name, and my heart immediately dropped. They had woken up the correct person out of bed. They had shoved me all the way here because they needed me in Alcatraz. None of this made sense.

After I was “checked-in”, a different man came out from around the corner of one of many solid white walls and grabbed me from the other. Why did they all have to be so rough with me? I was not putting up much of a fight, seeing the situation I was in. The only “fighting” I did was the raucous I was making with my incoherent sentences trying to make something out of what was occurring. What was happening? Did I really do something that wrong? Was this all some kind of sick joke? Maybe a very realistic dream. As various questions spilled from my mouth, I received zero answers except for maybe a mumble or two from this new guy.

We were weaving through many hallways, and then the man still holding my hands behind my back brought me into one of the several rooms. It was a pretty small square room, with a wall full of cabinets on one side of it. He sat me down in a chair, trusting me that I was not going to do something. His loud footsteps traced across the floor before making it to those many cabinets. Opening the upper one furthest to the left, he tossed me a long blue button-up and pants to go with it. I was also given a pair of socks and shoes, as I did not have any with me throughout any of this. The man left the room so that I may change, the only bit of courtesy I had seen in the past four hours.

After changing I sat back down in my chair, giving me a minute to think through all of this. My mind raced. What had I done to be brought here? I put my hands in my head and tears fell. My clammy palms catching all of my feelings that sprang from the corners of my eyes. The quiet sobbing sounded through the small room and the officer or guard or whatever he was had twisted the knob, signaling to me that I needed to dry my damp cheeks. He motioned for me to walk out in front of him, my eyes now red and puffy.

The man brought me to a long hallway, filled with hundreds of steel bars. Walking past all of the cells I made eye contact with so many of these dangerous criminals and hearing their thoughts wondering the same thing I was; why was innocent little me here? He brought me to a door at the end of the cages holding those rambunctious animals. Scrambling through his ring of keys, he found the right one and unlocked the heavy door in front of us. It slowly opened until it hit the wall beside it. I stepped in. In the room, another hallway of cages stood in front of me intimidating me. Though it was smaller, it felt even larger than the one we came from. What made these cells differ from the others, were the fact that every single one of them was empty. The man opened the first one on the left and shoved me in.

I sat on my new uncomfortable bed set across from the sink and toilet. I was alone now. The guard had left and I was all alone in this hallway of cages as there were no other women at Alcatraz. I could feel the loneliness creeping into my body. Days passed. As I started to get used to my new routine, I slipped into my new normal. Weeks passed. I stopped asking questions, I never got any answers. I made a few friends with some of the male prisoners. Months passed. Our food isn’t horrible, but it is definitely not was I was used to. Years passed. I’ve now sat here for years, not knowing why, but knowing I’m eternally stuck on this island

A Dream

A Dream

There was an unknown place full of sweet water

To get there I needed to walk through the dark to find care

Half way in my journey I was hit with a breeze so cold

It ran chills through me but it had somehow brought me peace

With hope I started running to be closer to nature

Getting closer I stopped to admire the view feeling warm

There was a little opening where the sun made the area warm

Drawn to the environment, I yearned to get closer to the sweet water

Looking around, I thought to myself was this my nature?

Was this where I could finally find my care?

Could I make this my own and find peace?

In this place I didn’t feel cold

The birds sang showing me they weren’t cold

I danced to their music making me feel warm

It called me telling me to be at peace

It protected me and gave me sweet water

It taught me how to love and care

The song had shown me their nature

I was in euphoria, being one with my nature

Why would one find comfort in the cold?

I said to birds as I fed them with care

The sun was shining on us with emotions so warm

I ran to with the birds where I found a stream of water

It led to a waterfall that made beautiful sounds of peace

I walked closer but before I could find peace,

I fell leaving behind my nature

I closed my eyes letting go in the sweet water

My thoughts were empty and it felt so cold

In the dark shadows I had no longer felt warm

I was drowning without no care

It was time to say goodbye to my care

It was time to say goodbye to my peace,

And it was time to say goodbye my warm

I woke up realizing I was back to reality, back to my true nature

My room was dark and cold

My reality had no sweet water

I missed my sweet water and how the birds gave me care

The beautiful nature and the sun that was always warm

The cold overshadowed it but I will still lay here in peace,

Waiting for my next dream

Dance Practice

 Dance practice

Practice my favorite dance

I find myself in a trance

Tells a story of romance

Here I go taking the chance

Just hook by taking one glance

 People stopping in a stance

My passion has no end

 body bends to dance again

Lost Island

It was the beginning of the summer, my boyfriend and I wanted to go on a trip this break. We had talked about many places we wanted to explore and this summer we wanted to explore as many as possible. That leads us to decide to go on a cruise. This was very last minute so we knew we wouldn’t be able to get on a fancy cruise. We looked at available options and finally, we found one called Lost Island. It was going to leave from Florida and we live in Nebraska so we had to fly down there. We thought the ship name sounded great. It sounded like a ship that would take us to a lost island that hasn’t been explored. We looked for reviews before booking it, but for some reason, there wasn’t any. The ship was fairly small so there was a maximum of only fifty guests stated on their website. We were booked to leave June 1st and get back July 1st. It was going to be a month-long trip so we had to pack a lot.

It was now the night before the plane ride to Florida and we had everything packed and ready. We went to bed that night and couldn’t wait to leave Nebraska for Florida. We woke up the next morning and we packed all of our last minute things before we left before the airport. Our plan was set to arrive in Florida the day before we left for the cruise, so we ended up booking a cheap hotel room since it was only for one night. Once we had got to the airport we went through security and all that and made it to our gate on time. When we got in Florida we took a Uber to our hotel and went straight to bed.

It’s now the morning we get up early and do a quick morning routine. After that, we walk to a near Starbucks and get our coffee because we know it’s going to be a long day. We get our coffee then call an Uber to come to pick us up and bring us to the loading dock. Once we got in the Uber and he asked to wear we told him to the loading dock. He asked us what cruise we were going on and we told him. He said that he knew someone that went on that cruise but never made it back. We laughed because we thought he was joking, but we would learn he wasn’t. He drops us off and says good luck and has a nice trip. We said thank you and got our stuff and got out. When we got to the loading dock there weren’t very many people there, only like ten which surprised me because on the website it said they were about booked. I thought it was weird, but I ignored it. We thought maybe everyone else was running late. My first impression of the ship was that it looked sketchy. It was a semi-decent sized ship but it just looked old. We talked to the others that were waiting with us and they agreed. They were all older men and women and we were the only young couple.  We started to load on the ship. Someone took us to our room so we could bring our stuff there. After that, we had to head back to the main part because they had to do safety stuff. After that, we headed back to our rooms to unpack. The room was a decent size. It had a bathroom with a shower/bath, sink, and toilet. The room had a king-size bed and a forty-two-inch t.v. As you can tell it was a regular room like you would get when staying at a hotel. There were two dressers so I got one and my boyfriend got one. We started to unpack all of our stuff. We then heard that we were getting ready to leave so we laid in our bed and watched out our window while we started to take off. We were excited about this trip and to see the adventures it takes us on. The only thing we were worried about is what our Uber driver had said in the car. We kept brushing it off, but it always came back to our minds. This was going to take one week to get to our destination.

It was now a couple of hours into the trip. We had many more long and boring hours. To go. We had been in our room unpacking when over the loudspeaker they called us to the main part of the ship. We got shoes on and headed out there with the other people. All of the rooms were right by each other so we all walked together. Once we got there they asked how it was going and if we liked it so far. Everyone said yes. They just wanted to talk to us about a few more things including meal times, what time we should go back to our rooms, and some of the activities. They had a personal chef on board and he looked nice and like he could cook all of us agreed. He had shown us some of the foods he had made and asked us if we had any allergies and the things we liked and disliked.  The food looked super good and my boyfriend and I were so excited to get to eat. After the food discussion, the main person talked about some activities. He showed us around the ship showing us the pool, hot tub, pool table, etc. That took about an hour, then we headed to the main dining room to eat breakfast. My boyfriend and I had got the same thing which was a steak and cheese omelet and hashbrowns with coffee. It was delicious. After that, we just went back to our rooms.

Four days later and we were over halfway there. The food so far had been amazing. The hot tub was hot and the pool felt nice when we were getting too hot. We had played some pool but mostly spent time in our room because we were very bored and things got repetitive after the third day. We watched t.v, read some books we brought, played some board games we had also brought, and done some crafts.

On the seventh night, we went to bed hoping that when we woke up we would have arrived at our destination. Its morning and we were woken up by someone talking over the loudspeaker saying we had arrived. We were pumped and ready to go explore. The ship would park at a dock so we would still be able to sleep on it each night, but we were allowed t go anywhere on this island because it wasn’t super big. The island looked pretty nice overall. It was tropical looking. There were places to eat, animals to explore, and much more. My boyfriend and I got our stuff ready and the passengers and I unloaded the ship. While we were gone we were told that the maids onboard were going to be cleaning our rooms and the entire ship. We all said okay and started to explore.

The first place my boyfriend and I went was to get some food. There was a restaurant called the Lost restaurant and it seemed good. There were other places to eat, but that was the first one that caught my eye. We walked over there and ordered food. All of their food was tropical. We then sat down and ate. After we ate we went and explored the island for the rest of the day. Around 7:00 pm we went back to the ship and started to get ready for bed. We played some games until we fell asleep at around 10:00 pm.

The next morning we woke up around 9:00 am and got ready for the day. The crew had told us there were some pretty cool waterfalls on the other side of the island, but it was a 3-hour walk there and a three-hour walk back. There was nothing to bring us back there so our only option was to walk. There were no places to eat so the chefs on the ship made us easy food we could bring with us and eat when we got hungry. All of the passengers including my boyfriend and I decided we were going to go see the waterfalls. We were told we were allowed to swim where the waterfalls went down so we had to make sure we had our bathing suits and dry clothes. Once again the crew members were all going to stay back to clean up the ship and get everything ready for when we got back. We were all excited to go see the waterfalls. We start our journey to the other side of the island. After about halfway there we stopped and took a break because we were getting tired and had a snack break. After the break, we got back up and finished our walk to the waterfalls. After three hours we finally arrived at the waterfalls. They were absolutely beautiful and crystal clear. We all had our bathing suits on under our clothes so we took off our dry clothes and hopped in the water. The water was 70 degrees so it wasn't too hot or too cold. It felt amazing especially after our three-hour walk there. We stayed there for about two hours until we decided we should probably head back. We got out of the water, dried off, and ate some food before starting the three-hour walk back. There was a trail we followed on the way to the waterfall so all we had to do was follow it back to get back to the ship. On the way back we didn't take any breaks because we were all tired and just wanted to get back to the ship so we could take a nap.

Once we had arrived back to where the ship was supposed to be we couldn't find the ship. We started looking around to see if maybe we got lost. We realized we hadn't got lost because my boyfriend and I had seen the restaurant we had eaten at the day before. The ship and all of the crew members were gone. They had put all of our items on the beach and put some food on there as well before they left. The only people on the island were us, passengers, the ship, and the restaurant workers. We had gone and asked the workers if they had seen where the ship went but they all said it must have left when they were taking their nap. We started getting worried and looking around. Eventually, we found a paper nailed to a tree saying that they had left and they weren't coming back. It also said to ask the restaurant workers how they got there because they experienced the same thing.

We walked up to the restaurant workers and asked them why they were there. They all said that years prior they had gone on that ship for a vacation and the ship left them here. They tried to find a way back but eventually gave up and decided to make the most out of it. They built their restaurants because they knew the ship was going to keep on doing this to the people that decided to join. The restaurant workers were told that if they let any of the visitors know what was going to happen before the ship had left, the crew members were going to have to kill them.

Fast forward about a week. They should have been leaving the island for their way back home, but they were still stuck on the island. They had asked the workers and people before them to help them build shelters and little houses to stay in while they tried to find a way back.

Now another week goes by, they are still stuck on the island. This is the day they should be arriving back in Florida where they would be getting picked up by their parents. Their parents had arrived and seen the ship but none of the passengers were anywhere to be found. The parents and family members of all of the passengers were all starting to worry where they all were. They asked and asked the crew members where they were but they just kept saying they didn't know. Eventually, after a couple of hours, the crew members say that they must have forgotten them on an island so if they wanted to see their family and children they would have to board the ship and take the week-long journey out there to see them. They thought and thought about it when the family of the missing passengers decided they would go on the ship because they just wanted to find everyone. They all got on the ship without anything. They didn't bring anything because they never expected to be going on a cruise in the first place.

One week later... The families had arrived they saw in the sand writing that said help. They started yelling their names until finally all of the passengers heard it and went to the beach. They saw their family members standing there. They all ran crying and jumping into their arms because they missed them. The crew members said to the passengers that were already there that they should take their families to see the waterfalls. They agreed. They all acted like they were going to show them, but about ten minutes into their walk where the crew couldn't see them they stop. They tell their families this is how they trick us into staying on the island and they leave us and they won't come back for us. They all came up with an excellent plan. They got the workers of the restaurants involved in it also. The plan was to act as they went to the waterfalls. Then while the crew members were not paying attention they would sneak back onto the boat so they could get back home. Their plan was set and stone.

About ten minutes later they heard the boat get ready to leave and the crew members boarding. They started heading to the boat. There was a secret passage on the side that the passengers had found when in their rooms, so they all used that and got on. Now that the recent passengers, their families, and the workers were all aboard they were ready to be back home. They had to be super quiet because if they were heard they didn't know what was going to happen to them. They had the food and water that the crew members recently gave them when they were supposed to be going to the waterfalls. They somehow had to make that last them a week. They were just determined to make it back home because they deeply missed their families.

Now a week later… They were finally back in Flordia. Once the boat was on the dock and locked up they got out through the secret passage on the side of the boat. The crew members were very shocked because they never expected them to be there. Other passengers were waiting to board the ship but the people that had just gotten off yelled to call the cops and told them not to get on. They all got ahold of their families while the cops were on their way. The cops showed up one minute later and were told the stories. The crew members were all arrested and put into jail. That ship is no longer running. All of the passengers made it back safely home and to their families

Sestina Poem

The crystalline water boiled, flowing over the small bag of tea,

The mug was a cocoa-colored brown, almost like chocolate.

Suddenly a figure shows up behind me, was it real or imaginary?

I black out. Once I wake up, I realize I’m in the hospital.

A familiar song plays in my head, but I can’t remember the title, what was the name of the song?

A nurse said something to me, but I couldn’t hear it very well, did she say rewind or remind?

I passed out once again but I was awoken again. “Hey wake up! I need to remind

You to-” My mind grows blurry once more, but I can still smell the aroma of tea.

In my dreamstate I hear once again the familiar song,

I take in another breath, this time there was a sharp smell of chocolate,

I then wake up and look around. Still in the hospital.

I layed back down, silently hoping that this was all imaginary.

Wait. But what would happen if this was all imaginary?

When did this all happen? I try to sit and think, I tried to remind

Myself what had happened. Why was I in the hospital?

Another nurse walks in, she is holding a foam cup filled with tea.

I take the cup, surprisingly it smelled of chocolate,

A tune plays in my head, I remember thinking to myself again, what is that song?

The melody plays over and over again, I begin to despise that stuipid song.

I wanted all of this to be over, I wanted all of this to just be imaginary.

I take a sip of the tea, it no longer smelled like chocolate,

I hear two people yelling outside my room, “Okay! Okay! You don’t need to remind

Me! I get it!” I cover my ears, setting down the cup of tea.

I shut my eyes tightly, repeating to myself: “I just wanna leave this hospital.”

It has now been over a week and I’m still imprisoned in this hospital.

The loud melodious number continues to play, but no one else can hear the song.

Everyday the nurse walks in, everyday gifting me a cup of flavorless tea,

Everyday, every minute, every second feels imaginary.

I get it, we’re all stuck here you don’t need to remind

All of us. You keep playing your tricks, evil glows in your eyes, which are the color of chocolate.

It has now been two weeks, two weeks of the same routine, how I miss the taste of chocolate.

Two weeks. We’ve been trapped here for two weeks. Stuck in this hell you call a hospital.

Two unbearable weeks of you taunting me from my room saying “May I remind

“You, you’re stuck here.” You grin as I fall unconscious, being greeted by the tormenting song,

Oh how I wish that everything that has happened here had been imaginary.

You scatter as the nurse taps my shoulder, in her hands an ice cold cup of tea.

It is now week three, they hand me my bags, a small jar of tea and a bar of chocolate.

Though everything was very real and not imaginary, I was glad to be leaving the hospital.

But as I leave, you remind me. “You can never get rid of the song.”
