All I know is that I'm running. I don't know where I'm running to, or what I'm running from. My legs pump, fast. My feet hit the ground to the rhythm of my beating heart. Around me, a scene develops. Tall grass is suddenly brushing against my legs. The wind whips my hair in and around my face. I can feel the crunching of the gravel every time my heel digs into the ground, pushing me further, faster, harder. It's exhilarating. My heartbeat fills my ears and I stay focused on running. Running.
Now, I'm in a forest. The dull roar of a river fills the empty space. My instincts kick in. I dodge the trees that are in my way. I duck under any low hanging branches, and leap over the roots that could trip me. All of a sudden, a thought hits me. Why am I running? Time slows down. I notice all the tiny fluttery movements of the birds, the leaves, the blades of grass, and tiny specs of dust floating in the air.
Next thing I know I'm falling. I try to get a grip on the reality that had just been under my feet, but I stumble as I'm sent flailing into the darkness. A bright beam of light nearly blinds me as I adjust to my new setting. White. White walls, and a bright light shining directly into my eyes. Everything is so blindingly white. I'm sat at a table and a man in a white freshly ironed suit sits opposite me. He folds his hands, and I look into his crisp blue eyes.
"Why are you here," He asks with a quizzical look spread across his face, "you know you can leave, right?"
I open my mouth to respond but no sound comes out. Why am I here? What is this place? Why was I running?
He chuckles and leaves me and my burning questions, as he gets up and walks away.
I watch as he walks into the distance, his shoes clicking with each step, the sound becoming fainter and fainter as he disappears. I'm alone.
BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.
I open my eyes and the ceiling of my room comes into focus. I turn off my alarm clock as I try to shake the feeling that something isn't right. What a strange dream.
